TRADITIONAL BAKED APPLE
Nearly any type of apple is suitable for baking, although many cooks favor Macintosh, Jonathan, Granny Smith, Delicious, and other old varieties. Softer apples generally take less time to bake, but crisp apples hold their shape better. Pears, plums, peaches, and berries also make scrumptious baked desserts or additions to apples.
Make baked apples plain or fancy by adding sweet, savory, and spicy fillings. Butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar are traditional ingredients, but you can let your imagination (and on-hand ingredients) take you into more creative territory. Oats, dried fruit, flavored liqueurs, herbs and spices, maple syrup, jams or preserves, cheese, nuts, and even baked squash or sweet potatoes take baked apples to a whole new level.
Prepare the apple by peeling a strip from the top. Use an apple corer or melon baller to scoop out the core and bottom. Put the apple in the dish and fill the center with yummy ingredients.
Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of water and some butter to the dish before baking in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Firm apples, such as Fuji and Royal Gala, may take 50 to 60 minutes to bake; softer apples, such as Macintosh, will be done in 30 to 40 minutes.
One done in the oven, arrange the baked apple on a plate or in a shallow bowl and add a dollop of whipped cream, ice cream, or yogurt. Add chopped nuts, mint leaves, raspberries, or other garnishes. Drizzle the syrup from the bottom of the baking dish over the apple and serve warm. Here is a simple recipe to get you started:
- 1 tsp. butter, melted
- 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1/8 tsp. cinnamon, or to taste
- 4 to 5 drops vanilla extract
- 1 to 2 Tbsp. chopped walnuts or pecans
- 1 large apple, cored
In a small bowl, combine the butter, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and nuts. Place the apple in the baking dish. Stuff the filling into the center of the apple, drizzling any extra over the apple. Add 1/4 cup of water to the baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees F. Remove foil and continue baking until soft, about 20 to 30 minutes longer. Top with vanilla ice cream.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Rachel Goodman Pottery is intended for making the everyday experience of home and kitchen a celebration. My products are meant to be used, held, enjoyed, and experienced on a daily basis. Here’s a quick guide to getting the most enjoyment out of your new everyday pottery.
Temperature Control
Each handmade piece is made with cone 6 stoneware. Only food-safe glazes are used, ensuring the safe consumption of hot and cold substances in my products. Avoid moving items between extreme hot or cold environments such as an oven or freezer, as this could cause thermal shock and result in fragility and cracking and/or breakage of the stoneware.
Cleaning
To retain the quality of your piece and ensure longevity, hand-washing is recommended. Please use a soft scrub brush and dish soap and avoid metal and/or abrasive sponges. However, the products are dishwasher safe but be aware that the dishwasher can dull the glaze finish over time, so it’s good idea to hand wash occasionally to keep your pottery looking its best.
NOTE: If your pottery piece has white or antique gold luster detailing, is coated in a Mother of Pearl opulent finish like some holiday or special occasion mugs, vases, or planters, or contains embellishments, DO NOT put the piece in the microwave (can cause sparks) or in the dishwasher--hand wash the item ONLY.
